Product Review: Epson’s WorkForce Pro Revolutionizes Printing

Printing technology has not changed much in recent years — until now with the Epson EcoTank.

The Epson WorkForce Pro WF-R4640 EcoTank printer revolutionizes printing with a new ink delivery system that offers all of the advantages of inkjets without many of the drawbacks.

The Epson WF-R4640 stores ink inside large bags, similar to IV bags used in hospitals. The cyan, magenta and yellow bags hang on the right side of the printer while the black bag hangs on the left, all hidden and protected behind plastic covers.

The large bags, combined with a print engine that uses just a touch of ink for each print, allow for more than 20,000 pages to be printed before ink runs out. Ink for the WF-R4640 holds its quality for more than three years, meaning the first printed page appears just as clear as the last.

The high-capacity ink bags cost $179 for black and $99 for each color, putting the cost per page under 1 cent, and makes the WF-R4640 both beautiful and economical.

Testing Produces Attractive Results

The WF-R4640 produces beautiful prints, especially when printing files loaded with graphics.

Most of our testing was done with plain office paper, but that didn’t matter: Large presentations, with a mix of text, business graphics and photos, all looked great. No color bled off the photos, and each of the letters in the text was perfectly formed and readable, even when examined closely with a photo loupe.

When we upgraded the paper, we were rewarded with an eye-popping experience. With photo paper, the WF-R4640’s performance equals that of the most capable photo printer.

When we used the EcoTank to scan and print color photographs, the resulting reproductions were nearly indistinguishable from the originals. And unlike inkjets of the past, the WF-R4640 produces pages that are dry and smear-proof as soon as they emerge.
